Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, over 10 million Ukrainians – men, women, and children – were displaced to neighboring countries and beyond. Although many have chosen to return home after the frontlines stabilized, a significant number remain abroad. A large group that commutes between their homeland and host countries redefines traditional understandings of the ‘refugee’ status and the diaspora. Recognizing the strength, resilience, and skills of Ukrainians, this panel will focus on integration strategies within host communities, while also addressing the Ukrainian state’s dilemma of wishing for the return of its citizens.
